How Florida Private Schools Should Evaluate Armed Security

School security is not a one-size-fits-all decision. A strong program begins with a site-specific assessment of the campus, student flow, visitor access, dismissal procedures, special events, and the surrounding environment.

For private and charter schools in Florida, the most important question is not simply whether an officer is armed. It is whether the security program is built around clear responsibilities, professional standards, communication, and a realistic response plan.

Start with personnel. Schools should evaluate the experience, licensing, judgment, communication skills, and professionalism of any security officer assigned to a campus. A school environment requires a different approach than a nightlife venue, retail location, or general commercial post. The officer must be comfortable around students, parents, administrators, faculty, and visitors while still maintaining situational awareness.

Next, evaluate the physical environment. Entry points, parking areas, playgrounds, drop-off and pickup zones, delivery access, exterior gates, cameras, and emergency exits should be reviewed together. Small procedural gaps can create unnecessary exposure even when a security officer is present.

Schools should also define what happens during an emergency. Security personnel should understand who calls 911, who communicates with administrators, how access is controlled, where arriving law enforcement will enter, and how reunification or evacuation procedures are handled. These responsibilities should be discussed before an incident occurs.

A professional security plan should also account for everyday issues such as unauthorized visitors, custody disputes, disruptive individuals, suspicious activity, medical emergencies, and special events. Good security is often measured by how effectively problems are identified and controlled before they become major incidents.

Finally, schools should require accountability. Post orders, incident reports, supervision, scheduling, and communication with school leadership should be documented and consistent. Security should function as part of the school’s broader safety culture, not as an isolated guard standing at a door.
